To Pardon or Ignore? Will President Bush Commute the Sentences of Ramos and Compean? If not, will Obama do so?
http://verticalca.blogspot.com/2009/01/bush-does-not-deserve-credit-of-pardon.html
It's pretty sad when CNN can show a Massachusettes Democrat Congressman who knows better than President Bush about how to properly handle this.

ICE insider seeks pardon for Ramos and Compean
EL PASO -- A candidate for assistant secretary of Immigration and Customs Enforcement urged President Bush in an open letter to pardon ex-Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean.
Miguel Contreras, a retired federal investigative official, said he wrote the letter in hope the president will grant the two El Pasoans a pardon or reduce their sentences.
"I reviewed everything I could find related to their cases, and based on my extensive experience, Compean and Ramos should be released and reinstated to their former jobs," said Contreras, who lives in Yuma, Ariz., and retired as a federal supervisory criminal investigator. "I have not received a response."
Before retiring, Contreras, a security consultant, worked for 30 years for various law enforcement agencies and departments, including ICE, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the former Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
President-elect Barack Obama's transition team recently notified Contreras he is being considered for a high-level job with ICE, and his first act after learning that was the case, he wrote the letter for the ex-Border Patrol agents.
Compean and Ramos were convicted in 2006 of civil-rights violations after shooting at a fleeing drug smuggler, Osvaldo Alderete Davila,
near Fabens in 2005, and covering it up. Ramos was sentenced to 11 years, and Compean to 12 years, mainly because of a mandatory minimum 10-year sentence on the federal charge of discharge of a firearm in commission of crime. After both agents were tried, Alderete, the Mexican citizen they shot at, was caught smuggling marijuana in a separate incident, and was tried and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
"I don't know Miguel Contreras, but I am thankful, because every little bit helps," said Joe Loya, Ramos' father-in-law. "We understand more pardons and commutations are coming down Jan. 15, and we are praying Compean and Ramos are included.
"They never lied about anything, and they never shot (Alderete) in the buttocks as some media had reported. The Army surgeon who testified at the trial said Alderete was shot at such an angle that showed he had to be turning around and standing as if he were pointing something at the agents."
During his two terms, Bush has granted 190 pardons and nine commutations, 31 of them were for people convicted of drug violations, including drug smuggling. He has until Jan. 20 to issue pardons and commutations.
Loya said the agents and their families have not stopped advocating for a change in their prison sentences.
The two former agents have received widespread support from the public, including from organizations like Friends of the Border Patrol and Grassfire.org, a grassroots group that uses the Internet to mobilize citizens. The online group has turned over to the White House more than 420,000 petitions for Ramos and Compean.
If Bush's term expires without his acting on the case, then it's possible the Obama administration might consider it. Rahm Emanuel, Obama's chief of staff, was among the more than 100 U.S. lawmakers who signed House Resolution 563 in support of a congressional pardon for the two men; the entire House has not voted on the proposal.

Huck PAC National Volunteer Team
The following is a recent e-mail sent out by Huck PAC Oklahoma (unofficial grassroots) Meetup Organizer, Mike Ford. OKforHuckabee has heard from a source that the National Volunteer Team (NVT) has actually already grown to over 1,600 members. If you have not already signed up for this, PLEASE DO SO NOW! Thank You!
Dear HuckPAC volunteers,
Thanks to all of you who have responded to Mike Huckabee's call on January 1st to become HuckPAC volunteer group leaders. We are pleased to announce that by January 4th, the HuckPACvolunteer project response exceeded all expectations with 1,144 volunteers (our goal was 500 by Jan. 15). 614 people have indicated they are willing to signup as a Group Leader and 369 people have said they will raise money!
The goal for each state is to have at least one group leader operating within each county. We are currently loading all volunteer data into our files county by county.
I have been asked to request a brief (2 paragraphs) introduction telling HuckPAC a little about yourself. Who you are, why you believe in HuckPAC and your reason for stepping up to join our leadership team.
These can be sent back to me as a reply to this email. In addition to your introduction, please include any former political or campaign experience, leadership experience, skills and resources that will be helpful in organizing our Oklahoma leadership team.
Please also tell me what county you reside in and if you are willing to be a temporary leader in a nearby county that does not have a leader until we can fill it. Areas like Tulsa and Oklahoma County will likely have several leaders, so we can work as a team to be creative with ways to service other counties until they are filled.
The information is coming fast and we are thumbing through a lot of it, so please be patient as we get our databases organized. We will be introducing our initial action steps soon. Once we become active, it will be easier to recruit volunteers. Most people don't want to join a team that is doing nothing.
Here are some upcoming activities we will be planning:
Our first meetings will be held in February. I would like to see a meeting scheduled in each of our 4 major cities (Tulsa, OKC, Bartlesville and Muskogee) for all local HuckPAC volunteers to attend on a monthly basis. Our leadership team can have conference calls monthly and meet in person quarterly in various locations around the state. Of course, during elections, these meetings will become weekly.
The Republican Precinct Caucuses will be held in most counties on January 27th. It is very important that we get as many HuckPAC supporters and conservatives to their local precinct meetings. This is the beginning of the delegate process for the 2009 OKGOP conventions, where those who became delegates at the precinct caucuses will vote in our new County and State leaders, and be involved in other important matters. Unlike in the past, it is highly unlikely that anyone will be seated as a delegate who does not attend these meetings this year. Please note that 2008 delegates must attend as well, or they will not remain delegates in 2009!!! If you are unsure where your precinct meeting is, please call your County Chairman. If your precinct does not have a chairman, consider stepping up and becoming the precinct chairman in your area. I can help you with this.
I am speaking with some people around the state regarding a Human Life Amendment for the Oklahoma State Constitution. It is very likely that we could have one passed through our now Republican state congress, and also may be filing a petition to add a ballot initiative to one of the upcoming elections. The passage of the Human Life Amendment in Oklahoma would recognize unborn children as American citizens with full Constitutional rights under the 14th Amendment, rendering abortion unconstitutional.
We will also plan Fair Tax rallies for April 15th.
One of the things we are developing at HuckPAC is an online community similar to HucksArmy.com and Meetup.com. HucksArmy and Meetup members are encouraged to continue with their current formats if they would like to. However, once the new group formats are completed, I think we will find that it will enhance our internet base and eventually replace them both. Until then, I think we should continue to stay active on HucksArmy and the Oklahoma HuckPAC meetup group to generate web hits and stay in communication with others to build our team socially. If you are not currently a member of HuckPAC Oklahoma Meetup, please join if you would like.
Go to http://www.meetup.com/mikehuckabee-66/ .
Please send the link www.Huckpacvolunteer.com to your personal networks and encourage friends and family to participate. I honestly think we can grow HuckPAC Volunteer Team to 2,000 nationwide by the 15th, if we have not already. I'll keep you updated as I hear the progress reports.
Thanks for the response. I look forward to working with each of you.
Sincerely,
Mike Ford

The Final Push to Free Ramos and Compean …

Ramos and Compean are Depending on You!
Grassfire is urging ALL members of our team to take immediate action—faxing President Bush, the Office of the Pardon Attorney, your two Senators, and Representative, demanding Ramos and Compean are pardoned and returned to their families. Because we want to keep a sustained effort right through George Bush’s final day in office, we will send a second round of faxes, on your behalf, a week after the first! For convenience citizens can take advantage of our E-Z FaxFire system to deliver your personal faxes for a gift of any amount-- sample letter copy provided below. Or, if you prefer, you can send your own faxes by downloading the letters and the target numbers. (Contact list with fax numbers here).
Throughout the rest of the year, show your support for Ramos and Compean by displaying or wearing Grassfire’s “Bring Home Ramos & Compean” yellow ribbons. Get two yards (about 9 ribbons) for your gift of $20 or more.
From the Desk of:
Steve Elliott, President, Grassfire.org Alliance
12/19/2008,
On the day following the Official Ramos and Compean Day of
support, Ron De Jong received a phone call from one of our
Capitol contacts saying there was a "heavy volume of phone
calls and faxes for Ramos and Compean."
While I'm indeed grateful for such a tremendous outpouring of
support, both of these men remain in solitary confinement--
away from their families as we enter the most blessed time
of the year.
++ One Day Isn't Enough
Giving these former agents one "official" day of support simply
isn't enough. We need to do more. In fact, we need to keep
pressing until they are returned to their families...
I'm urging EVERY member of our 1.5 million
strong team to continue calling the White House
and the Office of the Pardon Attorney, as well
as your two Senators right through to President
Bush's last day in office.
In fact, if you haven't yet scheduled your personalized
faxes, do so by clicking here:
http://www.grassfire.net/r.asp?U=14463&CID=142&RID=15184768
If you would prefer to send the faxes yourself, we have
provided all the information you need (including fax numbers)
at this special FaxFire site. Whatever method you choose,
it is vital that you do something to help. Thank you!
We simply must keep up the pressure, and taking 5 minutes out of
our day to call once or twice a week does make an impact.
Here are the contact numbers that you need:
White House: 202-456-1111,
Office of the Pardon Attorney: 202-616-6070
Sen. Inhofe 202-224-4721
Sen. Coburn 202-224-5754
Remember, when calling be polite in your demands that their
lengthy prison sentences be commutated.
++ Alert Your Friends
This terrible story is an American tragedy, and as such I want as
many American citizens to know who Ramos and Compean are.
I want them to know how these two men put their lives on the line
for us. And finally, I want them to know how much they need us to
step up for them in their hour of need.
Please forward this message to 20-25 friends--encouraging
them to stand with you on behalf of Ramos and Compean by
calling the numbers above, and scheduling personal faxes
by clicking below:
http://www.grassfire.net/r.asp?U=14464&CID=142&RID=15184768
We need to continue to press for their freedom--right to the end.
Please commit with me to call a couple of times each week on behalf
of Ramos and Compean.
Thanks for standing with Grassfire.

BEIJING and ZHEJIANG – After conducting detailed investigations, ChinaAid has confirmed that from the end of September to early November 2008, a large police force was dispatched to raid house gatherings in Beijing and in areas near college campuses in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. More than 400 Christian college students were arrested and interrogated. House church leaders who led the gatherings were detained, and four were sentenced to re-education through labor for one to one and a half years. House church members were accused of “preaching to students” and “engaging in cult activities.” The house church groups were all affiliated with the Local Church network founded by Witness Lee (1905-1997).
It is believed that this large-scale suppression by the Chinese authorities against the Christian college students in Beijing and Hangzhou is a part of the government’s efforts to limit citizens’ religious freedom after the Olympic Games. ChinaAid calls on the relevant agencies in China to stop the harassment of house church Christians, return illegally confiscated funds and personal property, and immediately release the four church leaders who have been sentenced to re-education through labor.
